What size should I buy? PDF Print E-mail

Possibly the most important part of choosing the right bike is choosing the right size. The below information will hopefully give you a guide on bike sizes for both children and adults.

Children’s Bike Sizes

Wheel Size Age Range
12"   2½ to 4
14"   3 to 5
16"   5 to 7
20"   7 to 9
24"   9 to 11
26"+   11+ (classed as adults)

The above information is a guide for helping you choose the right size bike for your child. The comparisons are based on the average size of a child of a specific age. There is no exact age to size comparison, and if your child is comfortable on a bike, then you may want to choose a bike in a bigger age category.

Adults Mountain Bike Sizes

Inside Leg
Frame Size
25" - 26"

15" - 16"
27" - 28"   17" - 18"
28" - 29"   18" - 19"
30" - 31"   20" - 21"
32" - 33"   22" - 23"
34" +   23" +

The size of adult bikes is generally determined by frame size, as most adult bikes have 26” wheels. For mountain bikes, you can use the above sizing chart as a guide for which frame size to choose. Don’t forget that saddles can also be adjusted, so most bikes can be tailored to fit you.

Adult Racing Bike Sizes

Inside Leg
Frame Size
25" - 26"   16"- 17"
27" - 28"   18" - 20"
29" - 30"   21" - 22"
31" +   23" +

Similar to mountain bike sizing, choosing the right size of racing bike is determined by frame size, as most use 700c wheels. To get the desired affect from racing bikes, it generally requires you to be closer to the bike, thus improving the aerodynamics and increasing speed.
